Chapter Thirteen

Ember

‘Ember, I am sure you understand that your friend Brittany is on her last chance here. What we don’t understand is why, after a month of positive rehabilitation, she would suddenly throw it all away,’ Mrs Willing said, as Ember lay strapped down to the medical bed and stared up at the white ceiling above her.

‘Brittany didn’t want to do anything. I persuaded her,’ Ember said, her voice cracking, desperate for water.

‘The interesting thing is that she says she persuaded you,’ Mrs Willing said coolly. ‘What I want to know is where Brooke was during all this persuading.

‘I told you, she had already disappeared. She had nothing to do with it.’

‘Well at least you all seem to agree on that, so I can only presume you are telling the truth on that matter?’

‘Brooke knows nothing. She shouldn’t even be here. She has no magic,’ Ember said.

‘Now that is where you are lying and you know it. Brittany has already told us that you both witnessed her disappear. In fact her excuse for raising magic last night was that you were trying to trace her… to help her,’ Mrs Willing scoffed.

‘Oh right! Yeah, sorry… The drugs make everything confused,’ Ember said quietly. She hated this interrogation thing. They always did it separately so you had no idea what the other said. They always tripped you up. They always found you guilty of whatever crime they fancied at the time.

‘So let’s get back to the discussion in hand. Why were you already in their bedroom before Brooke disappeared, if you weren’t planning on doing magic with her?’

‘I don’t know; I can’t remember. I told you, the drugs you gave me make everything… fuzzy,’ Ember said quietly, elaborating with a long yawn.

‘Maybe we can jog your memory with a little electric stimulation then?’ Mrs Willing said, with a thin smile.

‘No! I mean I’ll try harder. I will!’ Ember said.

‘So why were you in their room, Ember?’

There was no good reason why she would be in their bedroom just before midnight. She had no idea what to say. She could go with the midnight feast option, but she was well aware that Brittany’s masking charm would have faded away and revealed their magic circle as soon as she lost control. The room would have been thoroughly searched and they hadn’t even thought to bring a single snack. All Ember had brought into the room was candles. It was all her fault, Brittany had warned her, but she was so sure of herself and now she had got everyone, even Cal in trouble… and for what?

Ember sighed. She’d had enough. Not once since she’d been sent to the school by her aunt had anyone visited her. Her mother had died in a car crash when she was little, then as puberty hit, so did the tragedy with her father. After he died, she had been sent to live with a strict religious aunt, who thought her mother had been a devil worshipper and had packed her off to school as soon as she was old enough.
